ABOUT AMULETS
Alchemy has it's roots in ancient Egypt.
The Egyptians used hieroglyphs to document recipes which used combinations of ground minerals, metals and other natural materials dissolved in water, or mixed with oil, or clay.
These chemical concoctions were often heated in order to stabilise them, and used for medical, cosmetic, artistic and construction purposes.
Ash, clay, metal, natron and sand, were finely ground and mixed with water, to a dough like consistency. This was then worked like clay, and often cast in molds. When the mixture was fired in kilns it baked hard, with a glassy outer glaze. This hard, pottery like material, is what we now refer to as faience.
Faience was used for both utilitarian and sacred items in ancient Egypt. It was widely used for statuary and decorative items, and in the manufacture of jewellery, for making amulets and beads. Egyptian faience was very often manufactured in shades of blue and green, but was also made in other colours, especially during the Amarna period.
Amulets that were used in Ancient Egyptian jewellery, often took the form of naturalistic animal and floral motifs. They also portrayed gods, and other subjects sacred to the Ancient Egyptians. The wearing of amulets was thought to bestow good health and happiness, to attract prosperity, good luck, and to ensure fertility and all the blessings of the gods.
