ABOUT  BES

Bes was the protective god of women, children and childbirth. He was originally known as Aha (Hor Aha), and also Horwer. Aha was possibly the first known, predynastic king of ancient Egypt. Aha was a god from the Old Kingdom. He was originally depicted wit the well known bearded face, and also with animal skin clothing, and an animal tail. Aha was also first depicted with a slender, long limbed, masculine body, the dwarfish form was introduced much later.

Bes/Aha was a protector god, warlike and brandishing knives to protect women and children, especially during childbirth and sleep. He also protected the pharaoh of the day.

Bes scared away demons and other danger, and entertained children. Bes was also the god of pleasure and happiness, associated with love, procreation, and drunkedness.

One temple devoted solely to Aha has been discovered at Bahariya (in Egypt) though statues to the Bes version of the god can be found all over Egypt, and Bes amulets were produced prolifically.

Amulets of Bes were thought to offer protection for the wearer, ensure fertility, and bring good luck.
